PressPlay: R&B’s Greatest One Hit Wonders, From The Early 2000’s

“I Like That” — Houston feat. Chingy, Nate Dogg & I-20 (2004)

L.A. bred singer Houston’s biggest hit to date is the 2004 single “I Like That.” Featuring the legendary Nate Dogg and former DTP signees Chingy and I-20, the single was a massive Billboard hit, charting globally. Peaking at #11 on the Hot 100, the single was followed up by the track “Ain’t Nothing Wrong,” but nothing could quite touch the impact of “I Like That.”

“Move Ya Body” — Nina Sky feat. Jabba (2004)

Despite their huge impact on the club scene, Nina Sky’s debut single “Move Ya Body” remains their biggest hit. Released in 2004, the song — which includes a heavy Caribbean influence — peaked at #4 on the Billboard 100.

“I Don’t Wanna Know” — Mario Winans feat. Diddy (2004)

Although we got to hear Mario Winans deliver his sultry vocals on the hooks of many of the popular rap songs from 2002 to 2005, it was his debut single, “I Don’t Wanna Know” that made us really want more. The song’s album, Hurt No More, peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and the single peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.

“Girlfight” — Brooke Valentine feat. Big Boi & Lil’ Jon (2005)

Although Brooke Valentine gave us a few singles to follow 2005’s aggressive hit “Girlfight,” none seemed to make an impact quite like it. Landing at #23 on the Hot 100, “Girlfight” became the anthem for cat fights across the nation.

“Look at Her” — Once Chance feat. Fabo (2006) 

Very few songs know how to really get a party started. If you ask anyone from the south though, “Look at Her” by One Chance was and is still a song that does the trick. Known as one of the most well-known snap music singles, it would sadly be the only track that we got from the talented group due to the changes J Records was going through. Although the Usher-discovered group has now gone on to disband, brothers Jon and Michael Gordon have formed the songwriting duo, The Gordon Brothers.

“Need A Boss” — Shareefa feat. Ludacris (2006) 

Though we only got one album from Shareefa, her lead single “Need A Boss” featuring DTP label mate Ludacris was enough to make us want more from the songstress. The album may have peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200, but its single only made it to #62 on the Hot 100. It did, however, make it to #3 on the R&B charts.

“Tell ‘Em What They Wanna Hear” — Rashad feat. T.I. & Young Dro (2006)

It doesn’t matter whether you were from New York or Atlanta, when Rashad’s debut single “Tell ‘Em What They Wanna Hear” dropped, there was no denying how good it was. While his debut album People Call Me Ray Ray had a few hidden gems on it, none were able to make it to the charts.

“Do It to It” — Cherish feat. Sean Paul of YoungBloodZ (2006)

Originally comprised of four sisters, Cherish had the whole world rocking with their hit single “Do It to It” in 2006. Falling under the Crunk&B or Snap&B era, the song was a commercial success and peaked at #12 on the Billboard 100. Though they released a few songs to follow, none quite matched the success of “Do It to It.” Their 2008 Yung Joc featured single “Killa,” however, came close with a peak position of #39.
