Throwback Thursday: Mariah Carey feat. O.D.B – Fantasy (Remix)

By

With Mariah Carey’s Daydream album turning 20 tomorrow, it was only right to pick a classic song from the album as today’s throwback pick.

In case you didn’t know…Mariah Carey is a multi Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. With sales over 200 million albums and singles and 18 No. 1 hits, Carey is one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

“Fantasy” was the lead single from Daydream, for her fifth studio album. Sean “Diddy” Combs served as the primary producer of the single. The song heavily samples Tom Tom Club’s 1981 song “Genius of Love.” The song’s lyrics describe a woman who is in love with a man, and how every time she sees him she starts fantasizing about an impossible relationship with him. The classic remix features rap verses from Ol’ Dirty Bastard. This musical moment allowed Carey to transition into the Hip Hop market as well as bring Hip Hop to mainstream audiences.

“Fantasy” achieved strong commercial success around the world. The song became Carey’s ninth No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became the first single by a female artist to debut atop the chart, and only the second single to do so after “You Are Not Alone” by Michael Jackson. It spent eight weeks at the top of the chart, and 23 weeks in the top 40, it was successful on other Billboard formats as well, including the R&B and dance charts. Its strong sales led it to be certified double-platinum by the RIAA.
