Jamie Foxx’s “The Jamie Foxx Show” (1996-2001) is one of the greatest comedic sitcoms of all-time. Arguably sitting somewhere comfortably in the top 10, the show is joined by other amazing shows such as “Martin,” “Seinfeld” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
Following the story of an aspiring Texas actor, Foxx — who plays the lead role of Jamie King — journies out to Hollywood to pursue his award-winning dreams, but ends up helping his family’s financially burdened hotel business. Throughout the show’s 100 episode run, fans saw the actor transform from former “In Living Color” cast member-turned-B-list actor to the Oscar-winning (“Ray,” 2004) entertainer we know and love today.
While “The Jamie Foxx Show” was praised for its hilarious comedic hijinks and iconic hand to the face catchphrase, the series also gave us some of the most memorable musical performances in television history.
In no particular order, here are the best singing moments of “The Jamie Foxx Show.”
“Slow Jam” — Jamie Foxx (Season 1, Episode 1)
After butchering an R. Kelly parody of “Down Low” with “Big Toe,” Jamie delivered the defining moment to the show’s debut episode with a throwback tribute honoring the iconic vehicles with the diamond in the back that the old folks sit in with the gangsta lean. Foxx’s performance in this episode marked the first time for many fans seeing him as a musical act.
“Dearly Beloved” — Jamie Foxx (Season 3, Episode 20)
A Jamie King original, Foxx went on to perform this ballad a few times throughout the show with the first time being the most memorable. In this episode, he used the moment to express his love for Fancy, who was about to be engaged to an old boyfriend. Armed with a great piano performance and heartfelt vocals, Foxx won Fancy’s heart that episode. The genuine emotion shown in this performance was unforgettable.
“Broadway” — Jamie Foxx, Garrett Morris & Ellia English (Season 3, Episode 4)
With the release of “The Jamie Foxx Show,” the actor separated himself from many of the other red-hot comedic sitcoms with his amazing infusion of music and comedy like this moment here. Not many comedians had a voice to go with their act as Foxx did. Although a great voice himself, it was amazing to see the star bring out the unexpected voices of Uncle Junior and Aunt Helen as well.
“The Proposal” — Jamie Foxx (Season 4, Episode 24)
Bringing Phil to tears, this Jamie King original embodied what every fan was yelling at the TV for four seasons. The cat and mouse game that Jamie and Fancy played for years was adorable, nerve-wracking and admirable. Foxx’s creativity was at its peak with this in-the-works ballad. The icing on the cake was Phil running out of the apartment in tears. A great piece of material, many players have used this quick ballad to earn the agreement of “til death do us part” from their spouse.
“Just My Imagination” — Jamie Foxx, Garrett Morris, Clifton Davis and More (Season 1, Episode 9)
Another great performance including a complete cast ensemble, this episode merged the old school with the new school. And, once again, the star gave others around him the opportunity to sound amazing — including Clifton Davis. As it centers around Jamie delivering another of his many great musical numbers, it’s such a shame we didn’t get to see them perform the entire song.
